Columbia County is located along Florida’s northern border, with its county seat in Lake City. The county falls within the Third Judicial Circuit, which encompasses seven counties stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Georgia state line. Columbia County operates two trial-level courts — a Circuit Court that handles felonies, major civil disputes, family law, and probate, and a County Court with jurisdiction over misdemeanors, traffic infractions, small claims, and lower-value civil cases. The Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller serves as the official custodian of records for both courts, preserving all filings, docket entries, orders, judgments, and other documents generated through judicial proceedings.

Individuals searching for court records in Florida have access to multiple official resources. Records can be located through local clerk offices, public-access terminals at the courthouse, and various online databases. FloridaStateCourts.us may assist users in finding court locations, contact details, and general information about available judicial services across the state.

Are Court Records Public in Columbia County?

Most court records in Columbia County are open to public inspection. Florida’s public records framework is built on two complementary statutes: the Florida Sunshine Law (Section 286.011), which guarantees access to governmental proceedings, and Chapter 119 of the Florida Statutes, which codifies the public’s right to inspect and copy records held by any agency acting on behalf of the state or its subdivisions.

Within the judicial branch, Florida Rule of Judicial Administration 2.420 specifically governs public access to court records. The rule establishes a presumption of openness but identifies categories of records and information that must remain confidential. In Columbia County, the following types of court records are not available for public inspection:

  • Sealed records — Any case file or document placed under seal by court order.
  • Adoption records — All adoption proceedings are confidential by statute.
  • Grand jury records — Proceedings and deliberations of the grand jury are secret.
  • Mental health proceedings — Records from involuntary examination and commitment proceedings under the Baker Act.
  • Juvenile delinquency records — Records involving minors in the juvenile justice system.
  • Trial and appellate court memoranda — Internal drafts, work product, and conference records of judges.
  • Personal financial identifiers — Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, and credit/debit card numbers must be redacted from publicly accessible filings.
  • Arrest and search warrants — Affidavits supporting warrants remain confidential until the warrant has been executed and returned.

Parties filing documents with the Clerk are responsible for ensuring that confidential information is properly redacted before filing. If confidential information is inadvertently included in a public filing, a motion to seal or redact may be filed with the court.
